Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH, is a common condition affecting a large proportion of men as they age. It isn't cancer, but it can significantly affect quality of life through bothersome urinary symptoms — and thankfully, it's very treatable.

What is BPH?

BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, which sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. As the prostate grows, it can press on the urethra and interfere with normal urine flow.

Symptoms of an Enlarged Prostate

• Weak or interrupted urine stream
• Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
• Difficulty starting urination
• A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
• Blood in urine or semen (should always be evaluated)
• Pelvic or lower back discomfort

What Causes BPH?

The exact cause isn't fully understood, but age-related hormonal changes are believed to play a central role. Risk increases significantly with age, and family history may also be a factor.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Men above 50 should have regular prostate checks and PSA testing; those with a family history of prostate conditions should consider starting closer to age 40. Any new or worsening urinary symptoms — or blood in the urine — warrant a prompt evaluation.

Treatment Options

Medical Therapy

Alpha blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are often the first line of treatment for mild-to-moderate symptoms, helping relax the prostate and bladder neck or reduce prostate size over time.

Laser Surgery (HoLEP/ThuFLEP)

Laser enucleation of the prostate is considered a leading option for significantly enlarged prostates, offering minimal bleeding, no incisions, and a relatively quick recovery.

TURP

A well-established transurethral procedure to relieve urinary blockage caused by BPH.

Robotic or Surgical Options for Complex Cases

For very large glands or where cancer is also a concern, surgical options are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Is Prostate Enlargement Linked to Cancer?

BPH itself is not cancer, but its symptoms can sometimes overlap with those of prostate cancer, which is why proper evaluation — including PSA testing — is important rather than assuming symptoms are "just BPH."
